When is the best travel time?
The best time to travel New Zealand is different for everybody. It completely depends on your family's interests. Do you have the flexibility to travel at any time or will you need to work around the school holidays? Either way, New Zealand is a country you can travel any time of the year.
September to November- Watch your children fall in love with the newborn animals and bright, blooming flowers of spring. Average daytime temperature: 18 °C.
December to February- The summer months are the busiest time in New Zealand. Locals are exploring their backyard and many visitors are arriving. Average daytime temperature: 23 °C.
March to May- Autumn is a great time for families to travel New Zealand, with fewer crowds, and stable temperatures. Average daytime temperature: 19 °C.
June to August- Winter in New Zealand coincides with the United Kingdom’s summer school holidays, giving you more time to explore the country. Average daytime temperature: 14 °C.
How long do I need in New Zealand?
When travelling with children, we highly recommend a slower pace of travel. Staying in each place for two to five nights, driving less and exploring more. In two to three weeks, you can focus on one island or take a domestic flight and visit a few regions on both islands.
In three to five weeks, you can visit both islands but you will still need to make choices of which regions to visit, to keep a relaxed travel pace. If you have more than five weeks, you can comfortably visit both islands and spend extra time in the Bay of Islands.
What can I see and do?
Whether your children are five or fifteen, New Zealand is a world-class destination for a family holiday. With an abundance of family-friendly outdoor activities, your options of things to do and see are unlimited. Either together with your kids or take turns.
Marvel at the largest colony of gannet in the world. Go stargazing in a dark sky reserve. Visit the clearest lake in the world. And have a close encounter with the world’s only alpine parrot. We have carefully selected small-scale activities for the whole family.
Where can I stay?
Immerse yourselves in ‘real’ Kiwi hospitality. Away from the crowds. And never too far away from the beach! A cottage nestled on five acres of gardens and native bush. The kids will have plenty of places to go and explore, while you relax.
Experience the daily life of a working sheep farm. An alpine lodge. Stay lakeside. Go glamping and watch the southern stars. Take a look at a selection of our best accommodation for families, from comfortable to luxury.
How do I travel around?
The best way to explore New Zealand is by car. Driving through untouched wilderness, quirky towns and past rugged coastlines and alpine lakes. Travel at a relaxed pace and see the scenic routes of New Zealand.
We know it's important to spend less time in the car. That’s what makes New Zealand a perfect destination for families. You don’t need to spend hours in the car to reach the next spectacular destination. We can arrange a rental car that suits your family's wishes.
