Explore a bird sanctuary and marine reserve

Kapiti Island is a bird sanctuary and marine reserve that lies five kilometres off the west coast of the North Island, just north of Wellington. A predator-free nature reserve where endangered species are protected. An abundance of rare native birds can be spotted including kaka, kokako, takahe, bellbird and hihi. And of course the most sacred, the Kiwi.

One of New Zealand’s oldest nature reserves, there are a few visitors given access to the island each day. The Barrett Family warmly welcomes you, with genuine Maori hospitality. Their family has managed the island for over 150 years, working hard to protect the richness and diversity and keep human influence to a bare minimum.

Your adventure begins with a short ferry ride across to the island from the Kapiti Coast. Explore the nature reserve with a local guide and learn about the unique balance of conservation, ecology and local history. Wander the tracks, nestled between the dense forest, or climb the 521-metre peak for a sublime view. An enjoyable day tour for nature lovers!
