Go stargazing in a dark sky reserve

Be fascinated by the starry night sky in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The 4300 square kilometre area is the Southern Hemisphere’s only dark sky reserve. The clear nights and lack of light pollution make for a magnificent sight.

This family-friendly night stargazing experience is suitable for children five years and older. Join your enthusiastic guide on a short drive to the Mount John Observatory. View the objects and constellations visible in the sky to the naked eye, before using binoculars and telescopes.

You will have the chance to see the Southern Cross, Milky Way, Alpha-Centauri - our nearest neighbour, 4.3 light-years away and Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Learn about the nearest galaxies and the Magellanic Clouds. We’re sure the kids will be excited to wear their US Antarctic Expedition jacket that is supplied.
